Tucked away high in the mountains of the Costa Blanca, the village of Guadalest is a place where time seems to stand still. Known for its dramatic castle perched above a turquoise reservoir, cobbled streets, and breathtaking scenery, it’s also one of the region’s best-kept secrets for cyclists. Whether you’re looking for a relaxed ride around the lake or a challenging climb into the mountains, Guadalest delivers.

In this blog, we take you through two unforgettable cycling routes starting from this magical village. From shimmering waters to remote mountain passes, these routes capture the raw beauty of inland Alicante.

1. Guadalest Reservoir Loop
Start point: Begin in Guadalest village, near the main car park or the castle square.

This circular route leads you downhill toward the emerald waters of the Guadalest Reservoir (Embalse de Guadalest). Once you reach the lake, you’ll follow a scenic loop around its edge, riding a mix of quiet tarmac roads and peaceful rural lanes.

The terrain rolls gently, with small climbs and short descents as the road hugs the contours of the reservoir. You’ll pass olive groves, stone farmhouses, and occasional herds of goats grazing along the hillsides. Stop at one of the many natural viewpoints to admire the striking contrast between the vivid blue water and the white limestone cliffs of the surrounding mountains. After completing the loop, you’ll face a steady climb back to the village the perfect excuse to reward yourself with a cold drink and a view from one of Guadalest’s sunny terraces. End point: Back at Guadalest village. Bike type: Road bike, gravel bike, or e-bike. The climbs are steady but manageable. Who it’s for: Leisure cyclists with a moderate level of fitness. E-bike riders looking for a scenic and varied ride. Not recommended for heavy city bikes due to the elevation changes and mixed terrain.

Guadalest to Confrides via the Mountains

Start point: Guadalest village centre.

For those craving elevation and solitude, this route climbs into the mountains along the CV-70 a road beloved by local cyclists for its switchbacks, pine forests, and panoramic views.

Leaving Guadalest behind, you’ll climb steadily through dramatic scenery. The road winds its way along rocky ridges and past the quiet mountain villages of Beniardà and Abdet sleepy, traditional places that seem untouched by time.

Eventually, you’ll reach Confrides, a tiny village nestled in the heart of the Sierra de Aitana. This is the perfect spot to take a well-earned rest, grab a drink at a local bar, and soak in the mountain air before turning back the way you came or continuing deeper into the highlands for an extended ride.

End point: Confrides or loop back to Guadalest.

Bike type: Road bike with low gearing, gravel bike, or a high-powered e-bike. Expect sustained climbing and technical descents.
