Altea’s Best Bike Adventures
Cycling the Costa Blanca is more than just a physical journey — it’s a connection with nature, history, and coastal charm. Whether you’re a leisure rider or a seasoned cyclist, Altea and Albir offer a variety of cycling routes that showcase stunning landscapes, from citrus orchards and mountain climbs to peaceful coastal paths. Below are four of my personal favorite routes, ranging
from easy family rides to challenging climbs.
1. Altea to Callosa d’en Sarrià (via Algar River Valley)
Start point: Begin at Altea’s seafront promenade — for example, near the old port (Puerto Deportivo) or along the Paseo Marítimo.
Route description:
Ride from the promenade up to the N-332 main road.
Follow the CV-755 towards La Nucía.
After Altea la Vella, turn onto the CV-715 towards Callosa d’en Sarrià.
The road winds gently inland through citrus orchards, almond groves and fields full of oranges — beautiful in spring and autumn.
After about 19 km you’ll reach Callosa d’en Sarrià.
Tip: Just 3 km from Callosa is the famous Fonts de l’Algar waterfalls — a perfect detour for a refreshing break.
Grab lunch on a sunny terrace in Callosa before heading back.
End point: Callosa d’en Sarrià town centre.
Bike type: Ideal for road bikes or sporty e-bikes. There are some gentle climbs, but nothing extreme.
Who it’s for:
Perfect for active tourists with a reasonable fitness level.
E-bikes handle the elevation comfortably — regular city bikes are less suitable due to the hills.
2. Altea to Sierra de Bernia Climb
Start point: Altea town centre or the promenade.
Route description:
Head inland on the CV-755 towards Altea la Vella.
From Altea la Vella, continue onto the CV-749 this road climbs straight into the Bernia mountain range.
The route winds uphill through pine forests and past old whitewashed farmhouses (fincas).
At the top, you can either finish at the parking area or continue cycling to the trailhead for the Bernia Fort hike (the last bit is on foot).
The panoramic view over Altea’s bay is stunning, especially at sunset.
End point: Bernia Fort trailhead or the viewpoint at Forat de Bernia.
Bike type: Road bike, gravel bike or a strong e-bike. This is a real climb!
3. Altea Coastal Cruise
Distance: ~15 km round trip
Level: Very easy
Route:
Start: Altea’s promenade.
Follow the coastal bike path towards Albir — you’ll pass by charming beaches and small coves.
Continue towards Altea Hills or Cap Negret if you’d like to extend the ride.
This route is mostly flat with lovely sea views and plenty of beach cafés for a break.
Who it’s for:
Families, casual cyclists, and anyone with a rental bike or e-bike.
No steep climbs — just easy coastal riding.
4. Altea to Albir Lighthouse
Distance: ~12 km round trip
Level: Easy
Route:
Ride from Altea to Albir along the coastal road.
Leave your bike at the start of the lighthouse trail or ride up with an e-bike the path is paved and car-free for the final ~2.5 km.
The gentle incline leads you up to the Faro de l’Albir (Albir Lighthouse) with spectacular sea views all the way.
Watch for dolphins if you’re lucky!
Who it’s for:
Absolutely everyone families, couples, friends.
No steep climbs, lots of shade, and unforgettable coastal scenery.
